Where powdered pectin is used, corn syrup can replace one-half the sugar. And with liquid pectin, 2 cups of the sugar can be replaced with corn syrup.
Honey can also be used to replace sugar. Light, milk-flavored honey generally is the best kind to use. In recipes without added pectin, honey can replace one-half the sugar. When pectin is added, 2cups of honey can replace 2 cups of sugar in most recipes; 3/4 to 1 cup of sugar can be replaced by honey in small recipes.

The main reason for the increasing frequency of visits is that complications for the mother and baby are more likely to arise as pregnancy progresses. It is also important that the midwife have additional personal contact with the mother to foster trust and intimacy as the pregnancy nears completion.

Routine at every visit are urine dipstick for protein and glucose, blood pressure evaluation, fundal height measurement, fetal auscultation, and uterine and fetal palpation. Weight may be checked less frequently, but nutrition and exercise should be discussed each time.

At twenty-eight weeks, certain assessments from early pregnancy should be repeated. Call for another three-day diet report, as needs for protein, calcium, and iron intensify during the last trimester. Check the HCT/HGB again, for if the mother is anemic it may take time to find an effective solution.
