Davis's Coming of Age

Image
Last weekend was Davis's coming of age. Here's the explanation of coming of age from the UU website: "Across religions and cultures people honor the transition from childhood to adulthood with ritual. For Unitarian Universalists this coming of age ceremony is usually the culmination of a process that involves the young person meeting with a mentor, studying the history of our liberal faith and, most importantly, creating a statement of beliefs to share with their congregation. Rather that asking young people to affirm a creed, we ask them to think carefully about what they hold to be true, and the principles that guide their choices." Davis did his retreat earlier this year and wrote his credo. Martha and Clark and Mom all flew in for the weekend. I was disappointed because our gorgeous, sunny, warm weather disappeared for the just the amount of days that we had company. It turned cold and rainy! Stupid weather. Mom flew in on Friday morning and we went on a walk

Mother's Day 2018

Living away from all family is hard on holidays. I missed my mom and grandma, Martha and Clark, my sister, sitting at the pool at Casa Pacifica. But we made the choice to move away and I did have my immediate family with me. So that was very good. And we live in a beautiful place with fun opportunities. So we did those. We actually had a lovely mother's day weekend. On Saturday morning we went to the Alamo Drafthouse to see Infinity War, which Davis and Michael had seen while Sam suffered from a migraine, but saw again so we could see it as a family. The boys loved it and I thought it was one super long battle. But I do love the draft house. Unfortunately, the movie triggered a migraine for Sam, so he rested for the afternoon while Davis and I went on the bike ride with Jason and Garrett and Leah. We went down Lee Gulch Trail all the way to the far playground and it was challenging, but really fun. The weather stayed cool and nice and the smells of the flowers and the sounds of h

I got a bike

Michael told me that for my birthday (in March) that he would get me a mountain bike. I've been riding my cruiser since my sophomore year of college so it was time. But we didn't have any money after Vietnam and we didn't want a new bike. So Michael carefully watched craigslist for the perfect used bike. Last weekend he found it! It's green and it has gears and I love it. The weather has been spectacular all week and I have been out on my bike every day but one, gliding up and down the trails, smelling the flowering plants and trees, enjoying the vibrant green all around me, listening to birds and just being outside. The kids love it too and are so happy to ride with their mama. It's been my favorite times of the week. (Davis and Isabelle pictured)

Ups and Downs in the first week of May

We are finally having spring! All the trees are blossoming. I am walking the dog every day, rain or shine, because it is so nice to get outside again. (I'm listening to the Midnight, Texas series on my audiobook as I go). This week started really rough. I didn't know if I could make it through. Sam was sick all week which was hard as Michael was out of town again. Sam had a very flu-like virus and a terrible cough. It was a week of doctors as I went to my physical and went and had my bloodwork done, Sam saw his pediatrician and Davis went to his physical. Sam did finally rally by Thursday and was able to attend a shadow day at the private school we are thinking of putting him in next year. (Hopefully better for his migraines). He liked it and we are going to officially apply there. He even made one day this week at his current school. Win? Davis had a cough as well, but went to school anyway. He tried out this week for our school's nationally award winning Cyber Patri
