Tooth Extraction
I took Davis into the dentist today. We went to see Dr. Matt Johnson who is the best, coolest, nicest dentist ever. He really listens to the kids and I can't say enough about how great his whole office is. Which is good because today was not a regular cleaning.
Davis has a habit of having his permanent teeth come in at an angle toward his tongue, which doesn't fully sever the root of his baby tooth. The baby tooth remains slightly wiggly and the permanent tooth comes in behind the baby tooth at an angle. This is not good. It is also a sign that our sweet little man will need braces someday. There just isn't room in his mouth for all those teeth.
Today he had two wiggly teeth on either side of his permanent teeth on the bottom. Usually kids lose the bottom two and then the top two, but that is not the way Davis' mouth chooses to go and that is okay.
Dr. Matt said it would be best to take out both of the wiggly teeth. He gave Davis some nitrous oxide, put Star Wars on the movie player glasses and got to work. It was a bit traumatic for me to watch my baby so out of my control and in pain. Davis wasn't real thrilled either. At school this year, the spanish teacher quit and so the kids have been learning sign language. Davis used his new skills quite a bit today. With his mouth held open and the shot in his mouth he signed for us to stop and that it hurt. Later while we were chatting quietly while the doctor worked, he signed for us to stop talking. It was a little bit funny even later as he became more relaxed with the nitrous and his signs became more and more vague till he was just fluttering his hands.
He actually handled it very well. He was poised, didn't throw a fit and seemed pretty pleased, though extremely numb, when it was over and he had two baby teeth in a box to show for his trouble.
On the way home he sat quietly clenching two gauze wads in his mouth to staunch the bleeding. After he took them out he told me that he was okay. I asked him if I could get him anything and he told me that he really just wanted Sam. (ah heartbreaking sweetness!) I picked him up some macaroni and cheese for his lunch and took him back to school. Ms. Spaulding promised she'd look after him and sit with him at lunch to make sure he didn't bit his still-numb bottom lip. I hated leaving him there. Sweet boy of mine. The tooth fairy is going to treat him soooooo good tonight.

Following the Walter way--too many teeth for one mouth and braces--just like Michael and Grandpa.
