Taos Day 2 and 3
Yesterday we drove up to Taos Ski Valley and let the boys go crazy. It was very cold and everything was covered in white, deep snow. The village was pretty empty because ski season doesn't start till Thanksgiving and it was pretty amazing to have the whole place to ourselves. Michael and the boys threw snowballs at each other and built a snow wall and made snow angels. Then we met Mom and Dad and the grandparents at the Stray Dog where they were waiting for us and had a cocktail and hot chocolate for the kids.
We drove home and had quiet time and then went out for supper at Orlando's. It's a great, funky, friendly place with amazing art inside. I'm in love with red and green chills and want to eat New Mexican food as much as possible. Every restaurant here offers several vegetarian options here and we are loving it! Sam ate a tiny piece of his quesadilla and then we ordered him a brownie and cookie which they delivered with a candle and the whole restaurant sang Happy Birthday to him.
This morning Mom and I baked cookies and prepped for Thanksgiving. Then the two of us ran into town and picked up some more tamales and shopped in some Mexican import stores. They are great here. I'm in love with the Talevera pottery. I bought a wine pitcher that I love and mom got some great things for the house.
We came home and picked up the rest of the gang and went out for lunch at a place on the plaza called the Alley Cantina. It was basically a bar, but it was warm and they had fish and chips that were extremely tasty though they made my body extremely unhappy for the next few hours
After lunch, Mom and the old crowd went back to the house for a nap. Dad is really sick and needed to sleep. Michael and the boys and I walked around the plaza and then got into the car and drove about half an hour to a small family run ski resort called Sipapu. We had heard of a fantastic sledding spot on the way up and we wanted to scope it out. It looks fun and we'll definitely try sledding there when we come back after Christmas. Sipapu is perfect for our little family. We'll sign the kids up for ski lessons after Christmas there. It's all easy and small and feels like a great place for us since we aren't big skiers.
On our way back to the house we stopped at the Overland Sheepskin store to look at jackets for Michael. He doesn't own a single warm coat and he'll need one here. We didn't buy one yet, but we are going to think on it and decide before we leave. I also found a fantastic leather fringed coat with embroidery at a shop on the plaza, but it's very pricey so I need to think on it as well. What do you think? Can I get away with a leather fringed coat? I think it would be a fantastic fashion statement, but Michael is skeptical.
The sun is going down now and turning the mountain outside the windows a gorgeous pink color. I took a sunset picture outside the back door and ran back in. It's about 40 degrees outside now. It's supposed to be 16 tonight. Good thing the house is warm and cozy.
