Davis's Coming of Age

Last weekend was Davis's coming of age. Here's the explanation of coming of age from the UU website: "Across religions and cultures people honor the transition from childhood to adulthood with ritual. For Unitarian Universalists this coming of age ceremony is usually the culmination of a process that involves the young person meeting with a mentor, studying the history of our liberal faith and, most importantly, creating a statement of beliefs to share with their congregation. Rather that asking young people to affirm a creed, we ask them to think carefully about what they hold to be true, and the principles that guide their choices." Davis did his retreat earlier this year and wrote his credo.
Martha and Clark and Mom all flew in for the weekend. I was disappointed because our gorgeous, sunny, warm weather disappeared for the just the amount of days that we had company. It turned cold and rainy! Stupid weather.
Mom flew in on Friday morning and we went on a walk and then went to the mall and wandered before having dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. We had a so much fun catching up and talking.
The next morning, Davis had rehearsal at the church and we decided to cancel our sword skirmish activity due to weather. We arranged to take he kids to Leah's gym's parent's night out instead and have a grown up happy hour at the house.
That afternoon, Mom and I did some shopping and errands to get ready for the happy hour and then Martha and Clark arrived. We hosted a lovely happy hour that evening with our friends by the fire and embraced the dreary weather.
The next morning was the big day.We all headed to the church. Suzy and Leah came as well as Ben and Tobias and Isabelle and Arlo. Chris and Alana came as well. Marcie had sent a flower arrangement and a boutinierre for Davis to wear. Marchelle and Fabian, his godparents, had sent letters and Marchelle also sent a beautiful box with the UU symbols on the top.
The service was lovely and Davis did a beautiful job, reading his credo, singing Spirit of Life, and extinguishing the chalice.
After the cake reception following the service, we all drove over to Varsity Inn for Pizza and Arcade Games. Kai and his family joined the party and we had a fun early afternoon.
I was so glad to be able to celebrate Davis in his transition from child to youth in this way and it is so special that he has a group of friends at UU now with whom he has bonded.
