Life Goes On

And life goes on. It's not easy. It has been hard and imperfect. But the wheels keep on turning. Michael flew out of town for work, Davis went back to school a tiny bit at a time, Sam got a cold and had to go to the doctor, bills had to get paid, groceries had to be shopped for, yard needed to be worked on. Life.
Reintegration for Davis was hard. The first day we went back was intense with lots of crying. Davis was part of the group that was classified "most affected" because a child was shot in his class. They didn't get back into their rooms or even their wing of the building. The teacher was amazing and told the kids that even though two of the kids were absent and one was in the bathroom, that they were a family and they all had grief and everyone was part of this moment. I could tell it made Davis feel included. No kids in that group got their stuff back (laptops phones backpacks) as those room could be off limits for months. Two days last week they went back from 9-11 and rotated through classes every twenty minutes. Then they did that again yesterday and today and that's it. Grades are where they stand unless kids really need them to go up and then they have that opportunity, but they can only go up, not down. You can bet Davis liked that.
Sam got Davis's illness that had kept him out of school the week before and missed almost his whole week. He went back on Friday in time to participate in his Wax museum presentation as Ramses the 2nd. It was really cute.
Davis and I went on long bike rides together. It was a special bonding time. We really had a good time together. Davis had his 14 year old well check. He is 103 pounds and 5'5". I only have a half inch on him and I think that will be gone in a week. He is growing fast.
Michael came home for the weekend and we had happy hour at Bar Louie with Jason and Suzy while the kids played at Snobahn. On Saturday we went to Aurora for a big bike sale to get stuff Davis needed for his new mountain bike team. That afternoon Michael and I went to the Five Points Jazz festival with our friends Jen and Jon. It was fun to hang out with them, but the festival was a disappointment. It was crowded and the music was not good, and the line at the food truck was over an hour long and they ran out of booze. But there was a rainbow on the way home! While we did that, Davis went to a friend's house for a party and Sam went to the neighbor's house for a party. That was fun for both of them.
Sunday we skipped church and Michael and I ran some errands and then worked in the yard, hard. We turned the soil and built our the flower beds and moved rocks. We worked so hard to get it ready for my new flower gardens. We didn't want our yard guy to come back and do it, because during the week, while Michael was out of town, yard guy had hit on me and made unwanted advances. It was scary to me and so we did the rest ourselves.
That evening, we started watching one of our favorite old Survivor seasons with the kids. We made hamburgers and poured wine for us and made popcorn for the kids and introduced the kids to some of our favorite characters. It was really a lot of fun.
And now the last week of the school year is ending. Davis has two, two hour days this week to say goodbye to his friends. He won't be back at STEM next year. We made the decision months ago to put him in our local high school, but it's extra bittersweet now. I won't miss the driveline though! Sam is working hard on his story line presentation for the end of the year. This week has been terrible weather to end the year. We had almost six inches of snow yesterday and all week it's cold and rainy. Gross! It's supposed to be better this weekend though.
We plan to visit Buena Vista, the Great Sand Dunes and Taos this weekend with friends for Memorial Day weekend. Woohoo!
