Wings Over Houston and a Visit with the Grandparents
We drove up to Sugar Land on Friday afternoon to spend the weekend with my in-laws. We had a nice dinner with everyone and the boys were in heaven when they saw Michael's old Star Wars toys spread out on the floor. We visited and let them play and let them go to bed late.
Saturday morning we woke up and headed for the new Sugar Land farmer's market. It was great! They had lots of prepared foods (including a vegan booth) and lots of meats as well asian vegetables and a few produce stands. At one of the produce stands, I totally scored and got two boxes of zucchini blossoms and a box of figs!
After the market we drove out to the airforce base to see "Wings Over Houston", an awesome air show. My father in law was working at the ticket booth but we all got to say hello and then made our way into the show. The kids were totally blown away. There were tons of planes that you could just walk up to and look right in. There were military men standing with each plane so they could answer all of Davis' question of how fast they go and how high. We walked through the whole show and then made our way to fence by the air strip and laid out our blankets and chairs to watch the air show.
I wish I could have captured the boys' faces as they saw all of these planes. We watched WW2 bombers drop "bombs" with pyrotechnics. Davis' jaw fell open when we saw a plane break the sound barrier. We all nearly fell over when a plane parked in front of us turned on it's engines and propeller. Our chairs fell over, hats flew off and grit blew straight into our eyes. It was crazy wind created by one little plane!
We found some veggie corn dogs and stayed watching planes for three hours. We all got a bit sunburned and wind blown, but the kids (especially Davis) had an amazing time. All the books that Davis has checked out of the library on planes really came in handy since Michael had read them to him and so could explain all the different planes we saw.
After the airshow, we stopped for white wine on the way home and then enjoyed the coolness of the house and wine for a few hours.
The kids played with their new toy planes and star wars toys and Michael and I fried up those zucchini just like we learned in Italy. They were wonderful! It was such a fun treat to have them.
Uncle Roy came over and visited with us while we ate a lovely dinner outside on the patio by the lake. After supper Davis and Sam got to fish with their grandpa. Then we put the boys down and visited for a while into the evening.
We had a great weekend in Houston. We left early this morning and got to our church in time to help paint the RE room. We got to spend happy hour after all that painting work with some of our friends at the Railyard Restaurant. Pretty great weekend indeed.
